Monopoly slots coins twitter11/13/2023 ![]() ![]() The problem isn't them exploring something like companion, the problem is that they way they are designed currently makes it very difficult to justify not playing a companion because of how nonrestrictive they are. Most of the other ones, even Keruga (whose main problem is Fires) are fine power level wise, however still needed more restrictive text on them. Yorion just doesn't have much a downside. Lurrus is just a value engine with text that is easily worked around. Lutri is a fine, and cool, card that has a real cost. Emrakul was just gross, and should have been caught, but was intentionally left miserably powerful due wanting to ensure it saw play.Ĭompanions are similar they really wanted to have them see play, so they kicked the dials up to 11 on some of them, and severely over estimated the restrictions on them. Copter's design history reads like a bad joke, because somehow the version we ended up with is weaker than the one they proposed. These required them to willfully ignore how obscene the card was specifically because they decided it must see play. The most egregious example I can think of is Emrakul or Smugglers Copter. Lay of the Land is an okay card, and Lay of the Land+ is probably going to see play, so long as the added text is relevant. Attune with Aether was also inoccuous, but of the same vein. Rogue Refiner is a great example of this very thing: You got free energy on an already good creature. It had all the dials kicked up to at least a 8 on playability, however given the nature this meant the deck was a 10. The real problem with energy was that the rate at which you gained energy was fairly high, and the cost for doing so was fairly low, and the "cost" of building an energy based deck was negligible. No amount of "interacting" with energy would balance it, because it would lead to a miserable experience of either hosing it completely or doing nothing at all. It's the same issue that Energy had Energy's problem had little to do with not being able to interact with it, in reality. ![]() The problem is that these off-the-wall mechanics that provide extra resources need to be very carefully developed. The argument is that you want new mechanics to be exciting, and to see new play. Where things go wrong is the desire to push new designs so heavily, particularly with new mechanics, to ensure they see play. ![]() He's not wrong to push into new design space. r/magicTCG is not produced, endorsed, supported by, or affiliated with Wizards of the Coast.
